Started in 2008, Trees To Sleep Under is a solo project that documents Eric Velander's experience as much as it does his music. His self-titled debut tells the story of him leaving his home of Omaha, Nebraska for the US military and all the complications that accompanied it—from anxiety to alcoholism. And although there is only one word uttered on the entire album, this is not a piece of music lacking in depth: every song is a story from a different point of view.
Every track was composed in GarageBand using software instruments and played on a keyboard. Every now and then a guitar track will enter the mix and add texture, but the majority of the sounds are electronic. It may be a fairly lo-fi debut, but the strength of the music itself makes it clear that Eric will only get better from this point onward.
